Baptism records were divided into two
separate categories depending on the baptism practiced
by the church. This was because different types of
churches practice baptism differently. To some groups
especially orthodox Christians it is a matter of
religious conviction to assert that baptism is
literally equivalent to, to plunge something entirely
into the water, so that the water closes over it some
do the baptism at the time of child birth while the
others do that at a young age. Baptism records
normally contain the following details besides his
name and date of birth. This include
• Individual's name (usually a child)
• Parents' names (if a child)
• Child's date of birth if it is the case of infant
baptism
These records might also include
• Sponsors’ names
• Parents’ residence
• Name of officiating clergyman
• Legitimacy of child
• Margin notes about other events (e.g. some clergymen
will note a person's marriage or even emigration)
• Marks or notes about the child's death if he or she
died young
• in very rare cases, names of one or more of the
child's grandparents
Baptism records are all kept by the church and no
government or any other authority has any authority
over it. The church is answerable to none hence the
data in those records is always a question. However
these records are great to find your family tree as
most church records precedes any other genealogical
record base. |
