Federal bureau
of investigation records
Federal bureau of investigation or the FBI as it is
popularly known is the investigative and intelligence wing
of the United States of America. It comes under the
jurisdiction of the united states department of justice.
FBI is the most powerful investigative agency in the
united states with its jurisdiction over more than two
hundred subjects of federal crimes. Apart from crime
investigation and intelligence gathering FBI performs
another important function that is maintaining data
records of all crimes and criminals in United States of
America. These data regarding crimes has been indexed into
a huge database for future reference and is called the
uniform crime report. The Uniform Crime Reports (UCR)
receive data from more than 17,000 law enforcement
agencies across the united states making it the most
comprehensive database in the whole united states. They
provide detailed data regarding the volume of crimes to
include arrest, clearance (or closing a case), and law
enforcement officer information. Data collection of crimes
is categorized into different categories which include
violent crimes, hate crimes and property crime. Created in
the 1920s, the UCR system has not proven to be as
"Uniform" as its name implies. The UCR data only reflect
the most serious offense in the case of connected crimes
and has a very restrictive definition of rape. Since about
93% of the data submitted to the FBI is in this format,
the UCR stands out as the publication of choice and most
states require law enforcement agencies to submit this
data. |
